Taking Shahada

What is Shahada in Islam?

The Shahada (الشهادة) is the Islamic declaration of faith and the first pillar of Islam. It is a primordial step to enter Islam and a fundamental belief that defines a person as a Muslim. The Shahada states:

"Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadur Rasul Allah."

ASH-HADU ANNA LA ILAHA ILLA ALLAH WA ASH-HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN RASULU ALLAH

(أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمداً رسول الله)

Meaning of the Shahada

  • "Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah" → "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah."

  • "Wa ashhadu anna Muhammadur Rasul Allah" → "And I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

By reciting the Shahada with sincere belief, one formally enters Islam.

Steps to Take Shahada (How to Convert to Islam)

  1. Belief in the Shahada

    • Accept with full conviction that there is only One God (Allah) and that Prophet Muhammad is His final messenger.

    • Believe in all the fundamental Islamic beliefs, such as the Qur’an, the Prophets, Angels, the Day of Judgment, and Divine Destiny.

  2. Recite the Shahada

    • Say the Shahada in Arabic and understand its meaning in your language.

    • It should be recited sincerely, from the heart, with full conviction.

  3. Perform Ghusl (Purification Bath) (Recommended, Not Required)

    • After accepting Islam, performing Ghusl (ritual purification bath) is encouraged to cleanse oneself.

    • If not possible immediately, one can still start practicing Islam and perform Ghusl later.

  4. Start Practicing Islam

    • Pray (Salah): Learn and start practicing the five daily prayers.

    • Read the Quran: Begin reading and understanding the Quran.

    • Follow Islamic Principles: Adopt a lifestyle that aligns with Islamic teachings.

    • Seek Knowledge & Join the Muslim Community: Find a local mosque or Muslim community for guidance and support.

Do You Need Witnesses?

While not obligatory, it is recommended to take the Shahada in front of witnesses (such as an imam or other Muslims) to make it official and receive support in your new journey. However, if said sincerely in private, it is still valid.
