Wudu (وضوء) and Ghusl (غسل)

Wudu (وضوء) and Ghusl (غسل) are essential purification rituals in Islam. As a new Muslim, understanding when and how to perform them is important for your prayers and daily worship.

1. Wudu (Ablution) – For Minor Impurities

Wudu is required before performing Salah (prayer) if you lose your state of purity due to things like:

  • Using the toilet

  • Passing gas

  • Sleeping deeply

  • Touching private parts without a barrier

  • Losing consciousness

How to Perform Wudu

  1. Intention (Niyyah) – Internally intend that you are performing wudu for purification.

  2. Say “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah).

  3. Wash Hands – Three times, up to the wrists.

  4. Rinse Mouth – Three times, swishing water inside.

  5. Rinse Nose – Three times, inhaling water and blowing it out.

  6. Wash Face – Three times, from forehead to chin and ear to ear.

  7. Wash Arms – Three times, from fingers to elbows, starting with the right arm.

  8. Wipe Head (Masah) – Once, using wet hands to wipe over the head.

  9. Wipe Ears – Once, using index fingers inside and thumbs outside.

  10. Wash Feet – Three times, including between toes, starting with the right foot.

  11. Say the Shahada – "Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasooluh" (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His servant and messenger).

💡 Your wudu is broken if you:

  • Use the toilet

  • Pass wind

  • Sleep deeply

  • Bleed significantly

  • Vomit a lot

2. Ghusl (Full Body Purification) – For Major Impurities

Ghusl is required in cases like:

  • After sexual relations

  • After ejaculation (wet dream, etc.)

  • After menstruation or postnatal bleeding

  • When accepting Islam as a new Muslim (recommended)

How to Perform Ghusl

  1. Intention (Niyyah) – Internally intend to purify yourself.

  2. Say "Bismillah"

  3. Wash Hands – Three times.

  4. Wash Private Parts – Remove any impurity using the left hand.

  5. Perform Wudu – Just like normal wudu.

  6. Pour Water Over Head – Three times, ensuring it reaches the scalp.

  7. Wash Whole Body – Start with the right side, then the left. Ensure water reaches all areas, including underarms, between fingers, and toes.

After completing ghusl, you are in a state of purity and can perform salah.

💡 Tips for a New Muslim:

  • Wudu is needed for each prayer if it breaks.

  • Ghusl is needed only after major impurities.

  • Always start with intention and say Bismillah.
